Roots Equal Fruits

With faith we also need fruits in our lives. The fruits in your life are even more crucial than your gifts. Gifts are great, but without fruit you will begin to decay and wither. Pastor Mike begins his sermon discussing two types of fruit.

#1 – The Fruit of The Spirit:
Galatians 5
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

#2 – Multiplication:
An example would be an apple with seeds. That apple should produce more apples by spreading those seeds. If we have the seed of God, which is His word we should be spreading His word to others to multiply His kingdom.

From the fruits of the spirit, love is the most important foundation. You cannot display genuine patience and kindness without love. Jesus summed this up with His first commandment, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” And “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The key to the effectiveness of your gifts is the fruit of love.

I Corinthians 13:1-3
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

Doing good deeds without love has no eternal value. Living fruitful lives means we have the fruit of the Spirit working within us and on us.

The Bible references much comparison between people and trees. Trees are known for their fruits, just like people. If you are constantly dishonest; you are known by that fruit and you develop a reputation that you are not to be trusted. People can also eat from the fruit of your lives, just like they eat from the fruit of trees. Most tend to gravitate towards people who make you feel good and provide encouragement. These types of people prosper and multiply because that’s good fruit. We can also provide shade and comfort just like trees.

Jeremiah 17:5-6
Thus says the Lord:
“Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert and shall not see when good comes but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land which is not inhabited.

We do not want to be like shrubs. We want to be like the lush trees that bear much fruit.

Psalm 92:12
The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

God wants us to grow and prosper. Palm trees are known for longevity, steadfastness, uprightness, fruitfulness, and a righteous life. They are capable of withstanding harsh conditions. They’re deeply rooted with a flexible trunk, produce abundant resources, and remain evergreen their entire lives. God wants us to be like palm trees, having deep roots and constantly producing fruit.

Psalm 1:3-4
He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

The ungodly are like shrubs, dry and barren. The godly shall flourish and produce fruit in season. When you are living by God’s will the season of bearing fruit is frequent. A tree cannot bear fruit without roots. A few examples that display not putting down roots consist of persons who jump from relationship to relationship, church to church, or constantly changing careers. When your life is ever-changing you are like a shrub. Shrubs are easily replanted, but they are nothing special. A tree requires a substantial amount of work to relocate.

What do roots systems do?

#1 – They anchor.
They spread out and grow deep into the soil to provide a strong stable base for the tree to prevent it from falling over in the wind and rough weather. Like the tree, we need to have a firm foundation (His word) to stand strong.

Colossians 2:6-7
And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

Growing roots doesn’t happen overnight. You won’t see a sudden spike in the growth of a plant by staring at it for a few moments, but if you come back in a few months, you will see the evidence of its growth. Our lives are like this. After consistent care, in due time we blossom.

#2 – They provide food.
Specialized feeder roots at the tip of the root system absorb water, oxygen, and dissolve mineral nutrients from the soil. The rest of the tree gets food because of the root system. This is why it is important for a tree to be in good soil to be able to get nutrients from the soil. If a tree is in dry & dead soil it won’t get any nutrients.

Matthew 13:6
But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away.

Because the plant couldn’t get roots, the hot sun came, and the tree died.

#3 – They retain storage.
Roots serve as a storage site for carbohydrates which are essential food reserves the tree uses when it is not actively growing, such as during the winter months. There are seasons of joy and when blessings are overflowing. There are other seasons in life that come with tough times. Life has challenging moments, and we can’t always rely on how we are feeling, especially when we don’t have the drive to push forward. Regardless, we must endure. When there are drought seasons of good times, but we must reach down into our roots where we have stored up good memories to help us sustain our nutrients from the blessings God has previously given us.

Picture cutting down a tree. On the inside you see rings. The skinny rings are from a year that there weren’t many nutrients. The fat rings are from a year with an abundance of nutrients. Throughout the history of our lives there are fat rings representing the years of an overflow of joyful experiences and skinny rings representing tough years we endured challenging seasons.

Jeremiah 17:7-8
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.

When challenging times come the rooted tree doesn’t fear. We remind ourselves this may be a tough time, but God has delivered us before and He will deliver us again. Others notice when you can withstand the storm throughout the trials that arise. This helps give others hope that they can find a peace like that too. Trees of righteousness are the planting of the Lord. Being planted, consistent, and letting your roots grow down deep is the key to your life being fruitful. Roots take time and consistency. Keep showing up. Pray, read scripture, worship, come to church, and never stop chasing after God. He promises you will bear fruit if you don’t give up. Staying connected and bearing fruit is how God is glorified in our lives.

John 15:6-8
If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

Sometimes trees are uprooted and brought to another place. This is a very delicate process to ensure that the tree can bear fruit again. There are circumstances when it’s necessary to move a tree, typically when something is hindering healthy growth. In the transition of uprooting, a proper support system followed by ample healing time is essential for rehabilitation.

There are instances when a tree is cut down and it hits the ground. It’s never the trees decision to be cut down. At times our lives are cut down just like trees, such as encountering heartbreak. It takes roots to bear fruit. So, what happens when the tree is cut down?

Job 14:7-9
“For there is hope for a tree, If it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And that its tender shoots will not cease. Though its root may grow old in the earth, And its stump may die in the ground, Yet at the scent of water it will bud And bring forth branches like a plant.

Simply being exposed to the slightest scent of God gives us the nourishment we need to grow again. He is the God of impossible! Only he can take us from a hopeless situation and bring us back to life. We need our gardener to show up and prune us so we can bear even more fruit. The thing the enemy meant for evil God will use for good.
