The Anointing can refer to two meanings:
#1. The physical act of applying oil as a sacred ritual. (The Old Testament – To smear.) When you anoint a person, you are smearing them with oil.
#2. More commonly, the spiritual presence, power, and authority of God within a person signifying that they are set apart for a divine purpose or equipped by the Holy Spirit to perform a task. The spiritual anointing provides empowerment, illumination, understanding of God’s truth and is a manifestation of God working through a person for his will. (The New Testament – God Smearing a person with the presence of God.)
Baptism of The Holy Spirit V.S. The Anointing
Acts 1:4-5
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
After His resurrection Jesus spent 40 days with His disciples giving them infallible proofs, speaking to them about the kingdom of God, and He gave two last commands before He ascended to heaven.
#1. Wait for the promise of the Father. (Referring to John’s baptism.)
Matthew 3:11-12
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
John paints a picture of “The winnowing fork.” After wheat is harvested, it’s placed on a threshing floor. A large stone is rolled over the wheat to crack open the wheat, pressing down the chaff (the useless part of the wheat). After that process, the person with the winnowing fork digs into the wheat and throws it up into the air to separate the wheat from the chaff. The current of the wind blows the chaff away, leaving just the wheat (the useful part). When the Holy Spirit comes upon our life he baptizes our life with the Spirit of God. Like the wind, he blows upon our life separating the good things from the useless things leaving the wheat. God gathers that into the barn which is useful for him. Leaving the chaff to burn up with unquenchable fire. So, when the Holy Spirit comes, He comes with fire to burn up the useless things (bad habits) in our life. The baptism of the Holy Spirt comes to internally work on you.
John 14:15-18
“If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
God sent us a helper to grow and mature.
John 15:26
“But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
He tells us who He is because sometimes we forget.
John 16:13-14
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
As Pastor Barboza joked, “Denial is more than a river in Egypt.” Sometimes we are living in denial, and the Holy Spirit guides us to the truth so each of us can self-reflect for our growth. When you have issues with another person, first look in the mirror. It is easy to blame others, but harder to identify our own flaws.
Baptism of The Holy Spirit Provides:
Jesus’ last willing testament:
#2. You will receive power to be a witness.
Acts 1:8
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Power – Greek word for Dunamis.
Dunamis is the word Alfred Nobel used when he came up with the word Dynamite. Think of dynamite exploding. This revolutionized construction because it allowed them to move huge foundations to build new foundations. This is the anointing the Bible is referring to.
The Holy Spirit Smears you with:
Strength, Power, and Ability.
Supernatural Power: Allows you to do things you cannot normally do in your own strength.
Ability: Speaks about the amplification of your natural abilities, along with empowering your spiritual gifts.
The anointing comes after the Holy Spirit comes upon you. (After the baptism)
Why do we need anointing?
Isaiah 10:27
It shall come to pass in that day
That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder,
And his yoke from your neck,
And the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.
The anointing comes to destroy the plans of the enemy, set you free, and bring healing. Breaking ties of anything God doesn’t want you tied to. Simply get to know Jesus and watch him break off the things that don’t need to be there.
Anointing is for ministry, so that you can share the gospel. This is the way to expand the kingdom.
Luke 4:14-19
Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. So, He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
Before Jesus went into the wilderness to be tempted by the enemy, He went to the Jordan and got baptized. As soon as He came up from the water the Holy Spirit led Him to the wilderness. After a 40-day fast Jesus returned home in the anointing.

- Both by the Holy Spirit
- Two different reasons
Acts 1:4-5

Baptism of The Holy Spirit Provides:
- He lives within us.
- He helps us.
- He teaches us.
- He reminds us.
- He witnesses to us. (John 16:7-11)
- He works with us.
- He leads us into all truth.
- He hears and speaks the mind of God to us.
Jesus’ last willing testament:

5 Dimensions of Anointing:
- He wants us to preach the gospel to the poor in spirit.
- He wants us to bring healing.

- He empowers us to open people’s eyes to the truth. (II Corinthians 3:16)
- He empowers us to free the oppressed (to break/ shatter).
Our Heavenly Father wants His entire family anointed.
