The desire and need for money dictates how you spend a large portion of your time. Money is an indicator of where your heart is.
Haggai 1:1-11
The prophet was saying that God has noticed that the people seemed to think it was not time to build the Lord’s house. The people’s concern was the cost and time required to accomplish this. Often, we make the same decision. We think it is not yet time to do the Lord’s work. When God says, “Consider your ways,” he is pointing out that you are wrong. He’s proposing an adjustment in your thought process. There are many people that work so much but never seem to have enough. If we put anything before God or trust anything instead of Him, it will not succeed. He is after your whole heart and needs you to put all your trust in Him. No man can have two masters. It’s not about the money; it’s about your heart. Do you hold back? Or do you trust and obey?
James 5:1-6
“Your gold and silver are corroded.” Since gold and silver corrode when kept in storage, this has to do with greed. In the Bible money testifies to a person’s heart, stewardship, and spiritual state. It is a test of faith and trust, revealing whether you rely on riches or God. God wants you to be generous so he can bless you in return.
Five Reasons to Give on Purpose
Your money testifies to the condition of your heart.
Acts 10:1-4
Cornelius gave and prayed. An angel showed up and called him by name. God saw his generosity and heard his prayers. Later he and his family were the first non-Jewish people to be blessed with the Holy Spirit.
Luke 21:1-4
Jesus saw the woman gave all that she had out of love, commitment, and trust.
Matthew 26:13
This desperate woman poured out a fragrant oil on Jesus’ head that had cost her a year’s wages because of her adoration and trust in Him.
Your giving is a weapon.
Malachi 3:10-12
God saying “try me” is like Him saying let me prove it. Give Him your trust, and He can rebuke the enemy on your behalf.
Giving causes you to overcome.
Revelation 12:10-11
The enemy is the accuser. That's his weapon. He attacks your mind with shame and condemnation using this weapon. In "the courtroom of heaven," he also makes use of that charge by bringing up our transgressions, which he has seen. But Jesus' blood already paid the price to atone for our sins. Our deeds as well as our words serve as our testimony. What enables us to triumph is our reaction to what Jesus accomplished for us. Giving God your tithe is an expression of your faith in him. The testimony that is being declared is what is in your heart when you give it. It has to do with why you are giving.
Giving shows you are thankful.
Matthew 10:8
You can’t be thankful and selfish at the same time. You come to understand that everything you have is a gift from God when you are genuinely appreciative of everything He has done for you.
Giving reveals your trust.
Who you trust is who you worship. A life of surrender is what it means to live for Jesus. He gives us abundant life as a reward for our perseverance, even though it can be difficult and demanding.
Romans 12:1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
“Where your heart is, there is your treasure.”
