The Armor of God is a divine provision bestowed upon us by our Heavenly Father, as affirmed in Ephesians 6:10–18, an expression of His immeasurable love through which He graciously equips us with the spiritual strength and protection necessary to stand firm. Many of us have two questions. How do we understand its significance and effectively apply it to our lives? When Paul wrote Ephesians 6, he was speaking of spiritual protection rather than physical armor. God wants to safeguard our relationship with Him, our faith, our hearts, and our minds. Paul emphasizes that our strength must come from the Lord rather than ourselves, for the unseen battles we face require God’s strength, wisdom, and presence, calling us to stand steadfastly rather than retreat because Christ has already secured the ultimate victory. When the enemy attacks with fear and lies, or difficult obstacles come your way, we are to remain faithful and turn to Jesus for protection.
The Roman soldiers’ spiked footwear gave them a firm foothold in battle, allowing them to lock their shields together and remain steadfastly united, making it exceedingly difficult for the enemy to displace or overpower them. We have a very real enemy that will try to knock us down with things like fear, disappointment, pain, and temptation. God wants us to have a foundation that cannot be easily swayed. Jesus Christ is that foundation. James 4:7 tells us if we submit ourselves to God and resist the devil, he must flee. If we are fully submitted to God, we don’t have anything to fear, and He is our strength through difficult times.
There is one piece that is missing from the armor, the back plate. Roman soldiers never fought alone and stood in formation. Soldiers always stood in the same formation behind the front line. They were stronger together than they were alone. God tells us to be united with our brothers and sisters in Christ just like the Roman soldiers. When you isolate yourself, you become vulnerable, and you can easily be moved by the enemy. God never intended for us to tackle spiritual conflicts on our own. When you experience moments when you just want to give up, God expresses in Galatians 6:2 that we were created to support each other. Isaiah 52:12 promises that God will lead you forward with peace and protect you from behind because there are battles happening around us that we don’t spot.
The battle begins with our thoughts. The enemy knows that if he can control your thoughts, he can control your actions. The Helmet of Salvation protects our mind. We put this on by believing with all our heart that Jesus gave us salvation. Ephesians 2:8 says, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God."
The enemy’s greatest weapon is deception. The Belt of Truth is the most important piece of armor, as it holds the rest of the armor together. We put on the Belt of Truth by reading God’s word. John 8:31–32 records Jesus telling the Jewish believers that holding to His teaching proves true discipleship and brings freeing truth. To know the truth is to know Jesus, and to know Jesus is to read about him. Reading about Jesus makes you want to pray with Him, and praying with Him will make you want to have a connection with Him, which requires knowing the whole truth.
The breastplate shields the soldier’s most vital organs, above all the heart, which serves as the very core of life and strength. The "heart" represents the inner center of your thoughts, desires, and choices. Guarding it requires daily watchfulness over what you allow into your mind and life. This is why Proverbs 4:23 highlights, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." We put on the Breastplate of Righteousness by doing a few things. We must confess sin to God, ourselves, our mentors, and our leaders. We must also walk in obedience by choosing to follow the example of the life Jesus lived.
We put on the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace by remaining in God’s presence daily. God will give perfect peace to people who keep their minds focused on Him and trust in Him, according to Isaiah 26:3-4. When fear, anxiety, and trials come, we pray, read our Bibles, or worship Jesus to experience His peace that surpasses all understanding.
The Roman soldiers' shields were large enough to completely enclose their front bodies. This was done to shield them from the flying arrows that were aimed at them. Paul likens those to the enemy's assaults, such as fear, doubt, shame, temptation, and discouragement. Jude 1:20-21 encourages believers to strengthen their spiritual walk by building up their faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, and remaining in God's love. A great way to build faith is through journaling. It helps you remember what God has done for you and what He has gotten you through. We lift our Shield of Faith by trusting God’s promises and remembering His faithfulness.
The Sword of the Spirt is God’s word. It is our offensive weapon, and we use it to slay the lies of the enemy. His words bring truth and direction. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness by Satan; He did not argue, He simply replied with scripture. We use the sword by reading our Bible and studying God’s word so that we can memorize scripture to be able to fluently speak God’s promises over our lives.
The final piece of the armor is prayer. Prayer is what activates the armor, and it is what keeps you in relationship with God. If you aren’t connected with God, you won’t have His strength. Ephesians 6:18 calls believers to pray at all times in the Spirit with every kind of prayer and petition, staying alert and persistent for all the Lord's people.
Every piece of the armor points back to Jesus. The Helmet of Salvation reminds us that Jesus saved us. The Belt of Truth reminds us that Jesus is truth. The Breastplate of Righteousness reminds us that Jesus made us right with God. The Shoes of Peace remind us that Jesus gives us peace. The Shield of Faith reminds us Jesus is faithful. The Sword of the Spirit reminds us that Jesus speaks through His word. Prayer reminds us we get to have a relationship with our creator.
